THE TRUST HISTORY GROUP

The Exeter City History Group was established in April 2015, following an open forum held with fans. The Committee consists of Trustees Paul Farley and Martin Weiler alongside Gabriella Giannachi and Will Barrett (University of Exeter), Brian Carpenter (South West Heritage Trust) and Sarah Willis (Fanzine Editor, Some Sunny Day). An annual forum is held to showcase the work of the group and to liaise with interested parties.

The Group works closely with the University of Exeter, which has successfully applied for two grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund – the first for a project on The Histories of St James Park and the second and current one to establish an Exeter City FC Museum at the stadium.

Both these projects and the full range of heritage work overseen by the Group can be seen on the Grecian Archive website at:

The Committee reports to the Exeter City Supporters’ Trust Community Group (chaired by Paul Farley). Its aims include:

  • Setting up a Former Players Association

  • Collaborating with Senior Reds and other fan groups

  • Inducting new names into City’s Hall of Fame

  • Remembering players who lost their lives in WW1 and WW2

  • Marking the 125th anniversary of the first known football match at St James Park

  • Depositing documents and records with the Devon Heritage Centre

  • Creating a charity and museum accreditation for the ECFC museum at the ground

  • Having a strong Grecian Archive history website to ensure open access to our records and other materials

  • Establishing and maintaining an A-Z of players on the Grecian Archive website

  • Good listing, cataloguing and indexing of information we hold

  • Learning from exemplar Clubs and advising other Clubs and sporting organisations

  • Encouraging people to donate or loan their archives, memorabilia etc.

  • Exploring how to build good links with local schools (e.g. stadium tours) and local communities

  • Creating displays and exhibitions to showcase our history

  • Recording our history through photographs and film.

  • Collecting a team photo for every season

  • Collecting oral history – e.g. supporters, players, staff, reserves and apprentices

Please contact the History Group if you want to help in any way or wish to go on our mailing list. The Group can be contacted at: historygroup@exetercityfc.co.uk or via Reception at the Club.
